Quick answer: Choose by measured noise, power, thermal performance and transient response. A linear topology can suit sensitive low-power measurements; a switching supply can offer more power in less space. Neither topology guarantees better performance for every load.

Power conversion and output control are different

A typical linear supply uses a mains transformer, rectification and filtering followed by a linear regulator. A switching supply uses switched conversion with filtering and feedback. Both can provide CV and CC regulation, and either may have analog or digital front-panel controls.

Compare performance under matching conditions

PropertyUseful comparisonWhat not to assume
Ripple/noiseSpecified bandwidth, load and measurement methodEvery linear model is quieter than every switching model.
Efficiency/heatEfficiency and ventilation at the intended operating pointA topology label gives a universal efficiency percentage.
Transient recoveryOvershoot and settling for the same load changeOne topology always responds faster.
AccuracySetting/readback errors at the required rangeMore digits imply lower error.

Choose for the application

For a sensitive low-power measurement, noise and accuracy may outweigh size and efficiency. For a higher-power fixture, usable power, cooling and installation may become the main constraints. Define these priorities from the DUT and compare exact models instead of choosing solely from a topology label.

Acceptance measurements

  • Check stable output after the specified warm-up.
  • Measure noise with a suitable probe and the stated bandwidth.
  • Apply a permitted load step and assess recovery against the DUT tolerance.
  • Confirm current limiting and protection behaviour using the model’s prescribed procedure.

Practical checks

CheckWhat to verify
NoiseCompare ripple bandwidth, load and probing conditions.
Power and heatCheck the operating point and ventilation rather than topology alone.
Load stepsCompare overshoot and recovery under the same current change.
AccuracySeparate setting accuracy, readback accuracy and resolution.
